1. Simple subjects and simple predicates
The 5 year old boy with curly hair wanted to go home and sleep.
boy: simple subject
wanted: simple predicate. The simple predicate in a sentence is the verb.
2. Sentence Fragments: incomplete thoughts
examples:
The chicken, the turtle and the snail. What did they do?
Went to the beach to play volleyball. Who went to the beach?
3. Common nouns
day, girl, game, player, office
4. Proper nouns
All proper nouns must be capitalized
Monday, Anna, Monopoly, CES
5. Capitalizing Proper nouns
- days of the month: September, November
-abbreviations: Ave. Dr. Mr.
-Initials: John F. Kennedy
J. K. Rowling
-acronyms: CSI FBI NYC UN
-names of organizations: National League of Double Dutch
6. Making nouns plural
- add es: box – boxes
-Words ending in f or fe, you must change the f for a v and and es: wolf – wolves
- Some nouns remain the same when changed in to plural: one deer, ten deer
- Words ending in y, you must change the y for an i and add es: lady – ladies
